Consultation on the draft Local Plan

Consultation on a new draft Local Plan will take place between Monday 20 June and Sunday 14 August 2022.

The Local Plan will be used for assessing all planning applications and development proposals in South Tyneside in future years.

This is your chance to have your say about how your area will look and develop in the future.

As part of the draft Local Plan consultation, we are also consulting on a Sustainability Appraisal and a Habitats Regulation Assessment.

We have also organised some information sessions where you can find out more.

It is important that at different stages of the plan's development we ask residents for their opinions, and you are involved. 

We also welcome feedback from local businesses, local and national interest groups, along with service providers.

It is important to let us know what you support or object to, why, and what changes you feel need to be made to the draft plan.

You can submit comments from Monday 20 June until midnight on Sunday 14 August 2022.

The Local Plan is  available to read on our consultation website. Hard copies are also available to view at South Shields Town Hall and Jarrow Town Hall receptions. For full documentation, see Local Plan documents, assessments and evidence.

For your comments on the Local Plan to count they must:

• be made in writing
• be received by us within the timeframe of the consultation period
• contain your name, address and if possible your email address

If you're part of a group of people who share a common view, it would be helpful if your group submits a single representation and include within this a list of names and addresses of everyone it represents.

Information sessions

The sessions will start with a short presentation, followed by time for questions and answers. We would advise you to arrive for the start time.

A  Statement of Representations Procedure (PDF, 246 KB) has been produced, which provides formal details of the consultation.

Please note that copies of all comments (known as representations) will be made available for the public to view and reviewed by a Planning Inspector, and therefore, can't be treated as confidential.

Data will be processed and held in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2018.

By submitting a representation, you will also automatically be added to our database and kept informed of the next stage in the Local Plan process. You can opt out at any time.

Your comments, if provided in writing within the agreed consultation period, will be considered towards the development of the next version of the draft Local Plan. There will then be another consultation on the revised Local Plan, which is likely to be in late 2022 or early 2023.
