This Committee promotes, maintains and advises on high standards of conduct by Councillors and co-opted members. It oversees the compliance with the Council’s Members’ Code of Conduct as found in the Constitution, Part E Codes and Protocols, Section 2 which can be found here: https://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/article/4973/Council-Constitution. Standards Committee has an Independent Chair and Lay Member who are not elected Councillors, as well as Independent Person who works with the Committee. A record of alleged breaches of the code is reported to the Committee quarterly and is made publicly available. All complaints which cannot be resolved informally and which proceed to formal investigation are passed to full Standards Committee for Hearing. Hearings are open to the public with decisions made in private, these decisions are announced in public and published on the Council’s website.
