Overview
Anyone can be cremated at South Shields Crematorium, irrespective of where they live or their religious beliefs.
The extensive grounds consist of a wide variety of flower borders, trees and shrubs that provide a tranquil and peaceful setting for the Memorial Gardens.

Cremated remains can be scattered in the Garden of Remembrance irrespective of where the cremation took place.

We hold regular open days so you can see behind the scenes at the crematorium and get a better understanding of the cremation process.

Opening times
- Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 4pm
- Friday: 8.30am to 3pm
- Saturday: 8.30am to 4pm
- Sundays and public holidays: 11am to 3pm
- Mother's Day and Father's Day: 9am to 3pm
The Administration Office for the crematorium and the cemeteries is based here and is open Monday to Friday only.
Improvement works
The chapel is currently undergoing improvement works which includes increasing its capacity for services.
While this work is underway, services will just take place Wednesdays to Fridays.
The opening times of the grounds, as detailed above, are not affected.

COVID-19 guidance
Updated 12 April 2022.
- There are no restrictions on the number of people allowed inside the chapel.
- Outdoor speakers are available on request, so you can listen to the service from outside if you're uncomfortable coming inside.
- An online streaming service is available.
- Hand sanitiser and face coverings are available.
Online streaming of funeral services
If the person making the funeral arrangements has requested it, cremation services can be broadcast live on the internet at Obitus.
You will need a username and password to access the broadcast.
You must get these from the person making the funeral arrangements or the funeral director.
South Tyneside Council is not permitted to release that information.
There is a charge for this service.
Visual tributes
If the person making the funeral arrangements has requested it, a visual tribute can be played during the funeral service.
A range of options are available:
- A favourite single photo of a loved one, shown throughout the service
- A slideshow of up to 25 photos
- A video created by the family can also be played

Baby and infant memorial services
A Baby and Infant Remembrance Service, held in conjunction with South Tyneside District Hospital, takes place in the crematorium chapel on the second Saturday of May and November every year.
Hymns, prayers and readings are all part of the service.
All families and friends of parents who have experienced a baby's death are welcome to attend.
Future services will be held in the Crematorium Chapel.
A date for the Christmas service will be announced later this year.
