Who is this course for? (Eligibility and personal characteristics)Learners must be aged 19 years old or over and unemployed in receipt of a state benefit e.g. JSA; ESA (WRAG); Universal Credit or other State Benefit.

Learners must be resident within South Tyneside postcode area and be willing to travel to our training centre located in Bensham, Gateshead, NE8 2XN.

Learners must be resident within the UK / EU for at least 3 years prior to starting the course.

Our course is aimed at people wishing to take the first step to a career as a labourer. Individuals must be interested in working in construction and be willing and able to undertake manual labouring tasks.

What will I study? (Key modules or content)

Our construction skills course consists of:

  • Introduction to health and safety in construction
  • Laying block paving
  • Mixing and using concrete
  • Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification - required for the CSCS Green Labourer's card
  • Environmental Awareness and CSCS touch screen test and CSCS card - when all course elements completed

We support learners with ICT and employability skills.

What are the entry requirementsIdeally learners will have a minimum initial assessment score in English and maths of Entry Level 3.
Requirements of the course e.g. personal protective equipment, tools, materials

All personal protective equipment and tools will be provided.

Progression and Careers

You could progress to employment within the construction sector or gain an apprenticeship.
