Overview of the proposal
In our ongoing efforts to reduce road traffic collisions and improve road safety, the Road Safety team are proposing to install additional speed cushions on Durham Drive, Jarrow. It is envisaged the speed cushions will help maintain low vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for highway users, particularly pedestrians crossing Durham Drive to and from Calf Close Burn.
The proposal includes:
- Speed cushions installed in both lanes on the approach to the pedestrian refuge island located between Durham Drives junctions with St David's Way and Truro Way.

TRAFFIC CALMING PROPOSALS 2022
South Tyneside Council proposes under Sections 90A and 90C of the Highways Act 1980
and the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 to undertake the following:
Install traffic calming (all being speed cushions within the meaning of the Highways Act 1980) consisting of 1.7m x 4.0m speed cushions on Durham Drive, Jarrow.
The proposed traffic calming will consist of a raised surface 75mm above the existing carriageway.
The proposed locations are as follows in the below schedules:
Schedule 1 - Speed Cushions (1.7m W x 4,0m L)
- Durham Dr, Jarrow - 36m southward of its junction with St David's Way
- Durham Dr, Jarrow - 30m southward of its junction with St David's Way
The traffic calming is necessary to reduce traffic speeds.
Details of these proposals may be inspected from Monday to Friday during normal office hours at the Council's Legal Services Section at the address below.
If you wish to raise an objection, express support or make any other observations about these proposals, you must make them in writing at the address below (addressed for the attention of Sean Ventress/ ref (SV/DurDV/TC01) by 03/02/2022. Any objections must specify the grounds on which they are made.
