Introduction

Blast Off is a fun challenge involving members of the group being hoisted into the air.

Venue

A tree has been set up in Thurston Grounds to provide suitable anchors.

Staffing

  • Ratio: The normal instructor / student ratio.
  • Group leaders should hold RCI, or higher award, or have in house training.

Equipment

  • Helmets should be worn.
  • Adequate clothing for the conditions.
  • The centre provides all specialist equipment.
  • Instructor should carry out a visual inspection on all equipment to be used.

Operating considerations

  • Members of the group should be attached to a hoisting rope. In addition to this the instructor should take suitable precautions to ensure a controlled descent using appropriate belay method.
  • Participant being hoisted should be securely attached to the haul rope and checked.
  • Consideration given to the use of a chest harness when deemed appropriate.
  • Petzl Swivel and extension sling to be used to prevent fingers being trapped in the pulley.
  • At the end of the day the tree must be left with haul and safety ropes removed and tracer lines in place.
  • The tree and anchor systems will be subject to regular inspections.
  • Not to be used in high winds (Force 4 or above).
