Simonside Outdoor Adventure: Orienteering for schools
Contents
Overview
Orienteering can be a one off session, which is a popular choice for primary schools or a block of 6 weeks plus, if working towards a GCSE grade.
The venues that we use are fairly local which maximises the time learning rather than driving.
Orienteering covers many subjects in the school curricular and also puts pupils in a position that requires them to make decisions with relative and a controlled amount of freedom. It is through this independence that young people can develop key skills including:
- teamwork
- time keeping
- organising
- self and risk assessment
- soft skills
The sessions can be based at your site or a local park to maximise activity time. Alternatively, we could visit one of the larger permanent courses based around the region.
You can orienteer in just about any conditions so pupil's should wear:
- Trainers, boots or wellies
- clothing appropriate to conditions on the day
- waterproof top
If on a GCSE course then pupil's will need to bring a pen or pencil and a watch.
Price
Prices start from £130 per group and includes:
- full instruction
- maps & compasses
- risk assessment
- insurance
- transport if needed
Health and safety
Full guidance and instruction will be given to the group or individuals, including a briefing highlighting major hazards at each partivular venue including access tracks, water features uneven surfaces.
All staff are qualified to deliver the sessions and are experienced and knowledgable about the sites used.
