Overview
This is a BTEC Level 3, 2 year programme which is being run in partnership with TVS Education Ltd and Lead Education.
This full course gives you the skills and experience you need to start a career in outdoor education.
You will be able to take part in a a range of land and water based activities gaining personal proficiency levels in year 1 and coaching awards in year 2.
Level 1 to 2
Education
- BTEC Level 1 to 2 First Certificate in Sport - 1 year, full time study programme
- GCSE maths and English (for learners without a Grade C or Level 4 or 5)
- Functional Skills (for learners without a Grade E or level 3 or below in maths and English)
Entry requirements
- No previous knowledge, understanding or skills is necessary
- There are no specific requirements for this qualification
- We will review your previous qualifications and / or experience to consider whether this shows that you have the potential to achieve this qualification
- A keen interest in sport, outdoor adventure and the outdoor environment is essential
Course content and units
To reach a total of 240 guided learning hours (GLH), you must complete:
- the two core units
- the additional mandatory unit
- a choice of optional specialist units
The units are:
- Unit 1 - Fitness for Sports and Exercise (Core): External assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 2 - Practical Sport Performance (Core): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 5 - Training and Personal Fitness (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 7 - Anatomy and Physiology for Sport (Mandatory): External assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 3 - The Mind and Sports Performance (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 4 - The Sports Performer in Action (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 24 - Work Experience (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 6 - Leading Sports Activities (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
- Unit 11 - Running a Sports Event (Optional): Internal assessment, 30 GLH
How can you progress
- You will be able to move onto Level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTEC Nationals, specifically the Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Sport (Outdoor Adventure)
- Employment within the sports and active leisure industry, including junior roles working in the outdoor industry
- If you get the qualification at Level 1, you will be able to progress to related Level 2 vocational or academic qualifications such as other BTECs or GCSEs
Level 3
This BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure) is 180 credits and has 1,080 guided learning hours (GLH) across two years.
It has seven mandatory units and the rest are optional units.
Entry requirements
- 4 GCSEs grade C (level 4/5) or above including maths and English
- If you do not achieve a C (or level 4/5) you may still be considered for this course on an individual basis, or you may be suitable for the Level 1/2 qualification

- Unit 4 - Fitness Training and Programming (Mandatory): 10 GLH
- Unit 13 - Leadership in Sport (Mandatory): 10 GLH
- Unit 29 - Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure (Mandatory): 10 GLH
- Unit 30 - Equipment and Facilities for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Mandatory): 10 GLH
- Unit 5 - Sports Coaching (Optional): 10 GLH
- Unit 33 - Skills for Land Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Optional): 10 GLH
- Unit 34 - Skills for Water Based Outdoor and Adventure Activities (Optional): 10 GLH
Year 2 (Extended diploma 180 credits)
- Unit 35 - Leading Land Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Optional): 10 GLH

- Unit 37 - Outdoor and Adventure Expeditions (Optional): 10 GLH
- Unit 31 - Impact and Sustainability in Outdoor Adventure (Optional): 10 GLH
- Unit 38 - Alternative Pursuits for Outdoor Adventure (Optional): 10 GLH
- Unit 14 - Exercise, Health and Lifestyle (Optional): 10 GLH
How you can progress
This BTEC qualification has been developed to meet employment opportunities in the outdoor education and adventure industry.
It will give you the opportunity to enter employment, join an apprenticeship or progress into higher education.
Employment in outdoor education, sports leadership, coaching and outdoor adventure instructing is a common pathway for students.
How you will be taught
You will learn through practical sport experience and theoretical based learning.
Groups are taught through:
- classroom lectures
- practical sport
- group discussions
- practical application of sport
The course is assessed continuously through assignments, exam and portfolio building to meet the specific Edexcel BTEC criteria.
How you will be assessed
Most units are assessed through assignments which are submitted through the interactive learning platform.
The Level 1/2 course also has two external exams.

- practical sports
- demonstrations
- group tasks
- interviews
- practical coaching
- presentations
- work experience
Enrichment
During this course you will have a unique opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor and adventure sports, activities, work experience, expeditions and trips away from home and abroad.
You will also have an opportunity to play team and other individual sports.
Performance and development
You will take part in many outdoor and adventurous activities alongside the academic elements of the programme.
You will be taught by highly qualified teachers and professional outdoor adventure coaches.
You will get experience and work towards National Governing Body (NGB) awards in Outdoor Education such as:
- NICAS 1-4 (climbing)
- Go Mountain Biking Proficiency Award
- DofE Gold, National Navigators
- RYA Level 1-2 Sailing
- Powerboat Level 1
- 1-3 Star Awards Kayaking / Canoeing
- Level 1 Coach Training
- British Cycling Level 2
- Expedition Experiences (including trips abroad)
