Housing land supply assessment

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

Local planning authorities are required to carry out a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) to assess potential sites for future housing development.

The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment forms an important part of the evidence base for the , alongside our Strategic land review.

Its aim is to identify possible development sites and to:

  • Assess whether they could be suitable for housing
  • Assess when any development could happen
Provide an indicative estimate of the potential number of homes each site might reasonably accommodate if they were to be developed for housing purposes
